Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him. (Matthew 4:1-11, ESV)

Sermon Outline:
If Jesus is with you, you are able to do ministry amidst difficulty (14:1-7).
If Jesus is with you, you don’t need from people what God alone deserves (14:8-20).
If Jesus is with you, you can encourage others because Jesus is with them too. (14:21-28).
Discussion Questions:
What are the ministries (Areas God has given you opportunities to exert influence for the good of the Kingdom) you currently have? How does this passage encourage you in those works?
In Acts 14:27 the church gathers to celebrate all that God has done through Paul and Barnabas during their 2 year journey. What can your table celebrate regarding all that God has done in the last 2 years?
This Sunday we had the privilege to hear from one of our previous elders, Perry Marshall. Perry taught through the passage on “taming the tongue”. James warns of the power and harm that can come from our tongues. In seeking to be not just hearers of the Word, but also doers, Perry encouraged us to recognize the significance of this part of the body. Most of us have been built up by someone else’s words, but also hurt by them. It “ought not be so”, and we need not look any farther than Jesus for grace when we have a slip of the tongue. What comes out of our mouth points to the condition of our heart, and reminds us all the more that we are sinners in need of the saving grace of Jesus.
Discussion Questions:
Have you ever had a time where someone’s words lifted you up or inspired you? What happened?
In what situations or circumstances do you find it most difficult to tame your tongue?
How can the link between our words and our hearts help us lean more heavily on the grace of God given through Jesus?
